Iran's 12-member Guardian Council, an oversight panel of conservative mullahs and jurists, has been asked by the country's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, to investigate claims by opposition leaders, including the defeated presidential candidate Mir Hussein Moussavi, that the election was rigged in favor of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
The powerful Guardian Council supervises all elections. Its approval is required to certify that an election is legal. It screens all candidates for their religious and political qualifications and is known for its conservative Islamist views. It sets election days. It has the authority to evaluate candidates for Parliament and the presidency, and laws emerging from the body, to assure that they are in keeping with Islamic law and the Constitution.

Six ayatollahs are appointed to the council by supreme leader; the six jurists are named by the judiciary and require parliamentary approval. They serve six-year terms.
