Luke Skywalker is on patrol in the barren wastes of Hoth on a Taun Taun when Luke is suddenly attacked by a Wampa snow monster. The Wampa drags Luke to its lair. After Luke doesn't return to the Rebel base, Han Solo departs on a Taun Taun to find Luke. After waking up, Luke finds himself in the Wampa's cave.
Luke utilizes the Force to bring his light saber to himself and Luke cuts off the arm of the Wampa. Luke then escapes and proceeds into the frigid landscape of Hoth. After seeing this message, Luke becomes unconscious, but Han Solo finds Luke and the two heroes are eventually rescued by a snow speeder which finds their location.
Meanwhile, Darth Vader senses that a probe droid has found the Rebels and Vader orders the Imperial fleet to hyper space to the Hoth star system. Vader then gives Han to Boba Fett so that Boba Fett can take Han to Jabba the Hutt to receive the hefty bounty award that Jabba placed on Han. Lando conspires with Lobot to free himself and Princess Leia, Chewbacca, R2-D2 and C-3PO from the Empire. Eventually Luke arrives on Cloud City and ends up engaging Vader in a thrilling light saber duel.
Vader has beaten Luke in the duel, but Vader can't bring himself to kill Luke. Instead Vader reveals the secret to Luke that Darth Vader is Luke's real biological father. He is rescued by the Millennium Falcon. The film ends with the heroes gathered together at the location of the Rebel star fleet. Jabba agrees to pay her a bounty reward for Chewbacca after Leia threatens to explode a nuclear unit called a thermal detonator. It turns out to be a trick as the death star is fully operational. A massive space battle erupts between the Rebel Alliance and the Empire. The Rebel leaders want to retreat since they can't reach the death star with the shield generator still working. Lando convinces the Rebel leaders to give his friends more time to take out the shield generator.

After a great struggle, the heroes manage to blow up the shield generator with explosives. The Rebel star fleet detects that the shield generator has been destroyed and then immediately proceed to attack the death star.
Luke refuses to kill Darth Vader and subsequently hides from Vader during their duel. Vader reads Luke's mind to discover that Luke has a twin sister. Vader threatens Luke that if Luke will not turn to the dark side then perhaps Leia will. This enrages Luke and leads to Luke attacking Vader and overwhelming Vader with the most powerful light saber attack in the history of the galaxy. Luke ends up cutting off Vader's hand with Luke's light saber and Vader is completely at the mercy of Luke.
Emperor Palpatine encourages Luke to kill Vader so that Luke can replace Vader as the Sith Lord apprentice. Luke refuses to kill Vader and then surprisingly refuses to fight further with his light saber. Trusting in the will of the Force, Luke throws away his light saber and won't turn to the dark side. Palpatine is enraged and begins to fire Force lightning at Luke. Palpatine slowly tortures Luke with the awesome powers of the dark side. Luke begs for Vader to save him. Vader watches as Palpatine is killing Vader's son. At the last moment, Vader betrays Palpatine by picking up Palpatine and throwing Palpatine into the depths of the death star reactor core.
